"Every time you lose someone you really like, you die a little. Someone you've got used to, who can read your every change of expression, every gesture and tone of voice."
So begins the narrator of this story. A story based on true events of what happened to one young man who ventured into Libya at the height of Colonel Gaddafi's power.
Most people, in the prime of their lives, go through a period when they feel an instant spark of rebellion in their breasts at anything labelled forbidden, impossible, life threateningly dangerous or otherwise regarded with fear and apprehension by others. Because youth is a time to test boundaries. To prove oneself to oneself and to others. Everything unobtainable is a challenge. And, if such a challenge comes bedecked with possible financial rewards, kudos and prospects of career enhancement, then obviously so much the better!
And, at this point, even if you had told Gamal Ibrahim the story of Icarus, son of Daedalus, who dared to fly too close to the sun on wings of feathers and wax, it would have made little difference.
And who can blame him? Isn't that what being young is all about?
And if you had also told him that when entering a land where monsters rule it is wise to have a foolproof exit strategy he would probably have said, "Why? What have I got to fear if my intentions are honourable and my conscience is clear? Why should I need to worry if I am prepared to speak the truth at all times!"
Ah! The naivety of youth!
For what exactly the truth is, what is right or wrong, good or bad, is not what concerns monsters. What concerns them is power. And, when in power, monsters tend to have their own ideas about what should or shouldn't happen, and to whom.................

In a modern context hubris is defined as extreme pride or self-confidence; in its ancient Greek context, extreme pride in mortals infuriated the gods whose method of dealing with the arrogant invariably led to violence and tragedy. An Unlawful Act In Libya The Dictator Thriller Series edition by John M W Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read this superb little book in one sitting. What a well told story. It is indeed harrowing and taught but fundamentally this is a story with an instant hook that just pulls you along in such a fashion that you don't want to let go. The dramatic tension is so well crafted that I have rarely been so absorbed in a story literally from start to finish. My only criticism and it is not a fair one for it is selfish, is that I would have preferred the book to be longer because I enjoyed it so very much. I wont spoil the story other than to say that it is a simple premise and set in Libya under Col Gaddafi. The main Character is an ambitious Egyptian salesman who bites off more than he can chew and through his naivety finds himself in peril. Enough said I wont spoil it for you. A brilliant read.
.
I do not normally read short books. I am always left wanting more and feeling let down. That being said, I would be willing to read more by John Smith what ever length they be.
The author of this book is a true wordsmith. I found myself fully inserted in the story. I was the preverbal fly on the wall ! I smiled during the interview at the beginning of the story and cringed with empathetic pain at the end.
I do not care if this is a true story . It was true for me and several days later it is still in my head. I had to go back to the beginning and read it a second time to confirm the gut feelings that I had when reading descriptions the first time around. I had read the book from an American slant that assumed that all "Men are created equal " and have rights ! It is a shock to come up against an opposite point of view.
This is a "Pearl of great worth" that I did not have to sell all I had to possess. I will be interested in what others think in the future. I also will be watching this author for future gems
This is a compelling story about Gamal, a young man from Egypt who is not afraid to do legitimate business in a country regarded as dangerous at that time. His trip to Libya is strange from the very beginning.
Some parts of his experience are quite funny for a Westerner to read about. For example Gamal attempts to order his dinner to his room in a “luxurious” hotel and is asked by a member of a hotel staff whether he is disabled. When he admits that he is not, the man asks him to come down to the restaurant as everyone else does. There are many shocking bits like that in this book.
But some parts are very frightening, and Gamal’s whole business trip soon turns into a nightmare. I am afraid that I cannot tell more without telling too much.
I read the whole book in one sitting. It touched me in a profound way and made me realize how insignificant my own problems were.
The author says that this is a true story and it certainly sounds like that. It’s full of genuine emotion as well as facts about life in Gaddafi’s Libya that I did not know about.
As another reviewer noted, some people are not normally fans of short stories, myself included. That is, until I read this little gem. John Smith is an incredibly talented teller of tales, long or short, real or imagined. I picked it up and could not put it back down until I was finished. I realize this was based on a true story, which made it all the more gripping. Others have summarized, so I won’t do so here. This is not simply a dry report of what happened to an ambitious young man when faced with a merciless philosophy. Mr. Smith manages to put us right there beside him, chuckling at his naivety and humor, feeling his pain and admiring his courage. I will remember Gamal for a long time
This is the first book I've read by John M W Smith and I read the whole thing in one night. I just couldn't put it down. Based on a true story, it begins like an autobiography by the author, then a bit later, the narration is taken over by Gamal Ibrahim, a young man who applies for a position with the author's publishing company as a sales rep. He claims he wants to earn money to take back to his wife, but when he gets the job, he asks if he can travel to Libya to sell books to the students. His boss, John Smith, doesn't think going over there is wise and tries to talk him out of it, but the young Gamal is determined and very persuasive. You can't help but love Gamal as he has a unique and brave character. I wasn't sure where the story was heading at first, but I loved the way it was written and all the characters, except for the evil ones of course. Although this is based on a true story, it's written like an intriguing spy novel. My heart went out to Gamal for what he went through and also for John M W Smith because of how he must have felt when it happened. The story had me on the edge of my seat and I hadn't a clue how it was going to end. I felt myself caught up in the experience as if I was right there in the scenes with this unfortunate and brave man. And I could practically taste one disgusting meal he had to eat and all I can say is, Blueeerk! I highly recommend this story and look forward to reading more books by John M W Smith.
