Lord Marcus Hathaway returns from France to find his birthright has disappeared with the shameful death of his father. His sisters have been provided for, thanks to a fortuitous marriage but he is at a loss to know what to do with himself. What kind of life can a penniless peer pursue? Friends and acquaintances assume he will do what most men do and chase down an heiress but Marcus is determined to make his own way forward. Unable to settle, he takes to the road, intending to spend a few months of his life wandering. He wants to forget what he went through in France, forget that nothing is as it once was and that somehow and that he is honor bound to provide an heir for a name that no longer means anything. But then he meets Johanna Claybourn who is exactly the kind of female he is determined to avoid. Beautiful, wealthy and very, very willful, he suddenly finds he has his hands full, keeping her out of trouble. But Johanna is plotting the worst kind of trouble at all. For whilst Marcus may not want an heiress, Miss Claybourn is determined to follow her own inclinations and the delightful Lord Hathaway is very much to her taste...

Miss Mischief A Regency Romance edition by Kate Harper Romance eBooks

Kate Harper is an "automatic buy" author for me for a very good reason - she writes wonderful stories. Like the majority of her others, this is a good, clean regency romance with a strong heroine and a slightly troubled alpha male. What I really like about this one is that the heroine, Johanna, is rather flawed. Lord Marcus Hathaway's main flaw is that he's troubled by his inability to provide for his family (since his father lost all their money and then offed himself) despite the fact that his eldest sister has married well to a man who is perfectly happy to provide a home/funds for them. Marcus' situation is not of his own doing, but he persists in feeling responsible for regaining money to provide for his family so that his brother-in-law doesn't need to continue to do so, and Marcus absolutely does not want to have to marry an heiress for money - he hates feeling like he's bringing nothing to the marriage.

While he's traveling and trying to work through some understandable depression, he runs across Johanna Claybourn, a wonderfully strong heroine who is also flawed in the sense that she's extremely spoiled. Even though she doesn't put much stock in her incredible good looks, is quite outspoken in a delightful way, and isn't at all snobbish, petty or mean, she's VERY used to getting her own way... which means that when she wants Lord Marcus to stay at her father's house, she's going to find a way to do so, even if it means lies and manipulations. She's all good intentions, but she's shocked when things don't quite go her way and Marcus doesn't react the way he's "supposed" to in her head.

The two of them are wonderful together, lots of bantering, lots of wit, and plenty of romantic tension. He gets to play her hero, but then he finds out that he might not have needed to be quite so heroic... and Johanna finds out that she can't always have things exactly her way. They're good for each other; she makes him realize what he does have to offer a woman and he makes her grow up a little bit. And they're absolutely wonderful to read about, although I'm not going to go further into the various twists and turns of the plot or the villain and the drama because it's more fun to read that yourself! As with most of Ms. Harper's books - I highly recommend.

Miss Mischief A Regency Romance edition by Kate Harper Romance eBooks Reviews

Kate Harper is by far one of my favorite historical romance writers. It is because of her that I started reading historical romance and I have been hooked ever since! Her writing style is smooth and her characters and their world comes alive easily in your mind so that you can live every moment in the book.

Our main character is Lord Marcus who is just come home from the war a wounded veteran, and back to a world that is vastly different than the one that he left behind. His family’s situation has been drastically altered and now he must find a new place in an ever changing world.

When Marcus seeks a change from his current situation he sets out on a riding adventure at the urging of his mother. He hopes that his time on his own will help clear his mind and help him be back in time for the London season so that he can begin starting his life again.

What he wasn’t expecting to do on his journey is come to the rescue of the very beautiful and very outspoken, Miss Claybourn. When he comes to his aid, he hopes for a quick escape from Cloverton Hall but he finds the pull and schemes of Miss Claybourn and her grandmother too much to resist and extends his visit for a few days.

Miss Claybourn is determined to make his stay much longer and isn’t afraid to admit it, but she will find her schemes and games must be let go if she has any hope of catching more than his eye. Together they will have to overcome their own issues and history if they have any hope of seeing each other again.

Wow, I devoured this book! I couldn’t wait to read it and once I started it…I couldn’t put it down. I adore these characters, Miss Claybourn has just the type of attitude I imagine myself having and Marcus is just the type of man you can see yourself jesting with the rest of your life. Kate Harper has done it again and I cannot wait to read her next book!
Miss Mischief is a sweet little story about a smart, sassy country miss who sets her sights on a Lord whose sole intention is to pass through her village with little fanfare.

When Lord Marcus Hathaway returns from fighting Napoleon in France he discovers his father has impoverished the family. Fortunately one of his sisters has married well but he still is aware that everyone expects him to marry an heiress, something he does not want to do. He would rather make his own way. He sets off on a journey to discover a bit about himself and saves Johanna Claybourn from would be robbers.

Johanna is quite frankly a whirlwind of a woman. She is rich and beautiful and trying to escape the amorous attentions of many suitors. She instantly likes Marcus and looks for ways to keep him at her home. She is manipulative but also kind and humorous and it is very hard not to like her.

Marcus finds himself entangled in Johanna's life and try as he might, he just cannot stop thinking about her. Johanna's family is a great backdrop to this tale. This is a story without a lot of passionate scenes, yet is still a romantic story.
